Foreword

The Master and Fellows of ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú are delighted once again to host Sculpture in the Close. In so doing we acknowledge our gratitude to Lord Renfrew, who so imaginatively launched this concept during his mastership, and we celebrate the fact that this year’s exhibition is the 14th in the series.

¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú is known throughout Cambridge, and indeed beyond, for these marvellous exhibitions of contemporary sculpture. The generosity of the sculptors in lending their work for this exhibition is gratefully acknowledged.

We have also received absolutely invaluable assistance from the Hannah Barry Gallery, Corvi-Mora London, Hauser & Wirth, and Stuart Shave/Modern Art who have been exceptionally committed and supportive in the preparations for this exhibition.

The works of art committee of the College, led in such an excellent manner by the curator Dr Rod Mengham, has been responsible for mounting this exhibition, working closely with its advisor, Tim Marlow, Director of Artistic Programmes at The Royal Academy. Tim has been the essential link in the chain connecting the College with the wider art community.

The committee has also liaised with the gardens committee, chaired by Dr David Hanke. Valuable assistance was provided by the Manciple, Simon Hawkey, the Development Office under Richard Dennis, the communications officer, Helen Harris, the head gardener, Paul Stearn, our maintenance supervisor, Chris Brown, and our Head Porter, Grahame Appleby. We are also grateful for assistance from Deborah Mansfield in the Bursary and the Ecclesiastical Insurance Company.

The vibrancy and success of modern art exhibitions is increasingly dependent on donations, and in particular the support of the Friends of Art of ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú.

In particular, the continuation of the Sculpture in the Close exhibition programme has been made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Antony Gormley and Vicken Parsons. We are deeply grateful to them for their timely donations enabling us to continue the vision of bringing exciting and edifying contemporary art to Cambridge in a College setting.

I chose ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú has been a great home for me during my PhD. I chose ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú for a number of reasons – first, the location. We are central enough to be within easy walking distance of most things, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle (and tourists in summer!). The College also has extensive grounds, with amenities like the hockey pitch, football pitch and tennis courts all on site. Secondly, the accommodation is some of the best I’ve seen in Cambridge. My house was newly renovated when...
