Foreword

The Master and Fellows of ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú are delighted once again to host Sculpture in the Close. In so doing we acknowledge our gratitude to Lord Renfrew, who so imaginatively launched this concept during his mastership, and we celebrate the fact that this year’s exhibition is the 13th in the series.

¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú is known throughout Cambridge, and indeed beyond, for these marvellous exhibitions of contemporary sculpture. The generosity of the sculptors in lending their work for this exhibition is gratefully acknowledged. We have also received absolutely invaluable assistance from Will Gates, Hannah Gruy, Susannah Hyman, Kate Perutz, and Simona Pizzi at White Cube who have been exceptionally committed and supportive in the preparations for this exhibition.

The works of art committee of the College, led in such an excellent manner by the curator Dr Rod Mengham, has been responsible for mounting this exhibition, working closely with its advisor, Tim Marlow, who has been the essential link between the College and the artists.

The committee has also liaised with the gardens committee, chaired by Dr David Hanke. Valuable assistance was provided by the Manciple Simon Hawkey, the head gardener Paul Stearn, our maintenance supervisor Chris Brown, our lighting supervisor Peter Moore, and our Head Porter Grahame Appleby. We are also grateful for assistance from the Ecclesiastical Insurance Company.

The vibrancy and success of modern art exhibitions is increasingly dependent on donations, and in particular the support of the Friends of Art at ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú.

In particular, the continuation of the Sculpture in the Close exhibition programme has been made possible through the extraordinary generosity of Antony Gormley and Vicken Parsons. We are deeply grateful to them for their timely donations enabling us to continue the vision of bringing exciting and edifying contemporary art to Cambridge in a College setting.

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

I chose ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in Jesus has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Jesus also...

¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that ¹ú²ú¸»¶þ´ú is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...
